Fertility Acupuncture

the basics

What is fertility acupuncture?

Acupuncture can safely be incorporated into your fertility treatment plan and has been shown to have both physical and emotional benefits.

Treatment can help regulate menstrual cycles, improve blood flow to the pelvic area, reproductive organs, and uterine lining, and can even reduce stress and anxiety-related symptoms like insomnia, headaches, and gastrointestinal issues.

For some fertility patients, acupuncture is a brand new experience, while others have previously tried acupuncture, finding it helpful for other unrelated conditions.

Illume Fertility offers two types of acupuncture – traditional and laser (available exclusively at Illume Fertility) to provide each patient with the best available treatment options.

The Benefits of Laser Acupuncture

Illume Fertility supports patients in their journey toward wellness as a whole person - mind, body and spirit - which may include integrated services such as acupuncture. For those who are nervous about needle acupuncture, laser acupuncture is an excellent option. By conducting our own clinical study and through anecdotal feedback from patients, we know that acupuncture can positively impact the results of fertility care.

"The results of this large prospective study are exciting in that they provide additional support in showing that acupuncture has a direct effect on improving fertility. Laser acupuncture uses low-level light to regulate qi and help balance the body, the same functions as traditional needle acupuncture. Laser acupuncture is a viable alternative form of fertility treatment for people who may have a fear of needles."

- Dr. Amy Matton, IFW Program Coordinator

Traditional vs. Laser Acupuncture

Traditional acupuncture uses ultra-thin, sterile needles placed at strategic energy points around the body to regulate the flow of qi (life force) to restore balance and promote natural healing. Note: Acupuncture needles are quite different from the needles used to draw blood.

Have a fear of needles but still want to reap the benefits? Try laser acupuncture instead!

Our Laser Acupuncture Study

Illume Fertility is the only fertility center in New England to offer laser acupuncture, and has been a notable leader in the field. In 2008, Illume was part of a stand-out clinical study that found laser acupuncture (performed both before and after embryo transfer) in an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle significantly improved chances of successful implantation.

Like traditional acupuncture, laser acupuncture regulates qi and helps balance the body, except it uses infrared light energy to stimulate acupuncture points instead of needles.

Laser acupuncture is an excellent alternative for individuals who may have a fear of needles.

This low-dose therapeutic laser is sometimes referred to as a “cold laser” because the energy level is low and patients do not feel any heat from it.
